Red Easter Eggs

My favorite Easter tradition by far is dying eggs.  I love the anticipation of waiting to see what the eggs look like after they have been steeping in color for hours.  I completely fell in love with the use of botanicals last year when I experimented with Sunprint Inspired Easter Eggs using red cabbage.  However this year I wanted to experiment with a different natural dye.

To get these pretty red eggs I boiled the skins of about 24 onions, 8 cups of water and 7 tablespoons of vinegar for 30 minutes.  I then strained the onion skins out of the dye and boiled the eggs in the dye mixture for 10 mixture.  Put the eggs in the mixture overnight, and woke up to these pretties.

If you are interesting in seeing how I used botanicals as egg stencils, you can check out my tutorial from last years Sunprint Inspired Easter Eggs
